Thank you for joining the FIRST Sew Along celebrating my new book, "Patchwork Sashiko: Transform Your Scraps". This Eclipse Project Case is a simple make that let's your Patchwork Sashiko textile shine right on the front. And it's useful! Inside you can store all the tools you need for your Patchwork Sashiko practice: thread, needles, silicone needle pullers, marking pens/pencils, snips and a small ruler.

In Week 1 we talked about the fabrics to use and also cut out all the pieces ready to sew for this week. If you are new to the SAL, review the Week 1 post first, then come back!

The goal for this week is to add our Felt Needle Minder, prepare the Open Pocket and the Zippered Pocket. Let's break out our sewing machines and get started!

Add Felt Needle Minder

1.    Pin Felt Needle Minder in landscape orientation to the upper left corner on the RS of the Lining. Top is 1’’ down from the case edge and left edge is ¾’’ to the right of the case edge.

2.    Top stitch around the 4 sides to attach to the Lining.

***All further instruction is based upon the lining being in landscape orientation, RS up with Felt Needle Minder at upper left.***

Prepare Open Pocket

1.    Fold Open Pocket lengthwise WST, top stitch the fold.

2.    Position Pocket at the bottom of the Lining, aligning raw edges. Side with interfacing is at front.

3.    Pin and baste around the 3 raw edges.

Prepare Zipper for Zippered Pocket

  1. Fold each Zipper End in half RST, short sides together.

  2. Sew the side opposite the fold with 1/4'' allowance.

  3. Press with seam open and centered. Finished width is 1 1/8’’.

  1. Mark center on the RS of the zipper, then mark 2 ¾’’ to the left and right of center.

  2. Pull the zipper pull towards the center.

  1. With zipper RS up and Zipper End piece seam side down, insert each zipper end into a Zipper End and line up the outer raw end with the previously drawn lines on the zipper. Position so that the drawn lines are just visible.

  2. Sew Zipper Ends to zipper with ¼’’ allowance.

  1. Trim excess zipper flush with Zipper Ends.

  2. Turn Zipper Ends RS out.

  1. Press and top stitch. Finished length is 7 ½’’.

Prepare Zippered Pocket

1.    Lay closed zipper RS up with zipper pull at the right.

2.    Place the 2 ½’’ wide Zippered Pocket piece RS down on top aligning the top edge to the top of the zipper. (The Zipper Ends are a smidge wider than the zipper. Align Zippered Pocket piece according to the zipper.)

3.    Pin above the zipper teeth.

4.    Sew zipper to Zippered Pocket piece with a 3/16’’ allowance. Move zipper pull as needed to keep out of the way.

NOTE: I use my general presser foot and position the left edge as close to the zipper teeth as possible. Then, I move my needle completely to the left. This results in a 3/16’’ seam allowance.

  1. Fold fabric away from zipper, press and top stitch.

6.    Repeat steps 3-5 with the 4’’ wide Zippered Pocket piece (zipper pull will start out at the left instead of right)

7.    Fold pocket in half WST, matching the long raw edges. Press fold and baste around 3 raw edges.

8.    Place the Zippered Pocket on the right side of the Lining. Zipper is face up and vertical with zipper pull at bottom when closed. Align raw edges.

9.    Baste around the 3 raw edges.

That's it for this week! Not bad, right?
